Eric Kaulback is the co-founder of Roost, a community-first birding platform built for every kind of birder. A backyard birder turned enthusiast, he started Roost to create the welcoming, modern birding community he wished had existed when he was starting out. He lives in the Philadelphia area and birds across South Jersey and Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA.

About Eric Kaulback

A little over a year ago, Eric Kaulback thought birding was a strange hobby. Today, he's building a community for it.

It started with a backyard bird feeder and a small discovery — that two birds he'd always assumed were the same species, the Hairy Woodpecker and the Downy Woodpecker, were actually distinct. That moment unlocked something. The world got a little bigger and a little more interesting.

As Eric fell deeper into birding, he kept running into the same frustrations: tracking a life list, finding field guides, getting rare bird alerts, connecting with other birders — it all required five different apps and three different websites. Nothing talked to each other. Nothing felt built for a newcomer trying to figure it all out.

Together with co-founder Mark Gallant — an expert birder with 450+ species on his life list and a wildlife photography portfolio that stops people cold — they recognized a familiar pattern from years working together in digital sports media: a passionate, underserved community with no real home base. So they built one.

Roost is the platform Eric wishes had existed when he started. A place where a beginner in suburban Philadelphia gets as much value as an expert birding the coast of Massachusetts. A place where you don't need to know anyone personally to feel like you belong to something.
